Our Instructors

John Powell
John started shooting as a teenager on his family farm just two miles from the West Midlands Shooting Ground. Shooting at that time was for the pot and vermin control at rabbit and pigeon, rooks and crows, with the occasional “long tailed un” when the opportunity arose! Since that time John has shot game regularly, and shot clays for fun and practice at Hodnet, becoming a regular on the skeet range and at sporting in the nineteen eighties. John was introduced to coaching at this time by Dai Jones, and within a few years had taken on much of the individual instruction at the WMSG, closely following his mentor’s traditional shooting methods and style that has developed at Hodnet since its inception. John’s belief in the importance of a natural style of shooting, with the importance of correct body position and movement, has enlightened countless pupils over the years. With nearly a quarter of a century of coaching experience, John has built up a large client base of people making regular visits for practice and pre season warm-ups, and has coached many young shots from their first lesson to competence at game and clays. Some of these clients are now bringing the next generation of children to Hodnet to be taught with quiet patience the basics of safe gun handling and the ability to shoot any target, from clays on the skeet range, sporting targets, through all forms of field and game shooting up to the highest driven birds. John has a wide experience of instructing in the field, a service we are pleased to offer through the West Midland Shooting Ground. This can be of great benefit to young and novice guns, as well as those with more experience who are looking to improve their performance.
